Sony’s PlayStation 4 mandatory game installation features cannot be turned off

Sony’s PlayStation 4 mandatory game installation features cannot be turned off
Sony’s PlayStation 4 lead architect, Mark Cerny has this week explained a few more details about the new PlayStation 4 mandatory game installations that will require gamers to save large portions of games to the PS4’s hard drive to be played. Unfortunately this PlayStation 4 mandatory game installation features cannot be turned off and as you start playing a disk game on your new PS4 console the system will start to begin saving itself to your hard drive. With the amount of data being saved to the hard drive varying depending on the game in question.
During a PlayStation 4 event at the waterfront hotel in New York City Mark Cerny explained that Cached/installed game data will stay on the hard drive until the user deletes it. But Sony did consider giving the PS4 control to automatically delete the data but this approach was dropped as it thought gamers might feel “blindsided” and would prefer to manage the data manually themselves. He continued to explain that the disk installation is required on the PlayStation 4 console because the system is not designed to read games off of disks. Putting the game data on the PS4 hard drive alleviates the need for players to have to wait for the next level to load. In comparison the Xbox One console requires games are also loaded to the hard drive of the games console before play can commence.
For digital gameplay users will have to wait even longer, and times will be dependant on Internet connection speeds and the like. But Cerny explained that ideally, players wouldn’t have to wait more than an hour before beginning to play the partially downloaded games. The new next generation PlayStation 4 console will be launching on November 15th 2013 in the US and slightly later throughout Europe on November 29th 2013. The Sony PlayStation 4 console is priced at $399, €399, and £349 depending on your location.

StockRadars is Great smartphone stock app detects hidden gems

StockRadars is Great smartphone stock app detects hidden gems
Nearly every smartphone comes with a default stocks app, and if it doesn’t, then there are hundreds easily within reach. But since investing is all about reducing risk, obtaining accurate, timely, and relevant information is key. In addition, sorting and auditing stocks is time-consuming and requires specialized knowledge. With that problem in mind, Thailand-based startup Siamsquared Technologies has developed StockRadars, an app that helps users monitor the Thai stock market

How it works: Launched back in August, StockRadars is a stock analysis app that simplifies information for investors to help them better understand the stock market, thereby decreasing risk. The app uses its radars as tools through which users can set specific criteria for the stocks they wish to monitor. The app then parses through market data, analyzes each stock, then indicates which stocks match each radar’s criteria.

Users can choose radars based on their needs, and different types of radars are available for different type of investors. StockRadars comes with a free set of default radars but users can purchase additional radars with more advanced criteria such as P/E (price per earning), P/BV (price per book value), RSI signal, MACD signal, and Candle Stick. Additionally, advanced users can tailor the criteria for their own radars. The app currently scans 500 stocks on the market, which fall into 70 radar types everyday.

Going beyond the Thai stock exchange: StockRadars only analyzes the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), but the app remains available for download in all countries. As a result, foreign investors can use the app to monitor their investments Thailand.

According to Max Kortrakul, StockRadars’ CEO and co-founder, the startup plans to go beyond the SET in the future and offer analysis for other markets:
Since StockRadars was designed from day one to support multiple markets, we plan to open our service in Singapore’s SGX within first quarter of next year and other Southeast Asia markets after that.

Staying above the radar

Besides the traditional stock apps, the company doesn’t seem to worry much about other competitors, at least in the Thai market. Max commented:
Currently, there is no direct competitor in this area since the finance market in Thailand is quite a virgin land. Traditional stock trading apps may be our indirect competitors. Take Settrade streaming for example. But that’s if they want to provide the analysis for the users. Our plan is to integrate social into stock trading, making it simple for people to understand. To be a leader in this game, we have to compete with ourselves more than we have to compete with others. The key challenge is getting new investors to use the app.
StockRadars achieved 30,000 downloads less than a month after it was launched back in late August. Currently, the app has a total of 45,000 downloads, with approximately 10,000 active users per month. It was also listed as a Featured App in the Thailand App Store.
StockRadars is available on iOS and Android. Siamsquared Technologies is currently developing a version for Windows Phone.

Viber announcing it’s entering the sticker store battle with its own stickers

Viber announcing it’s entering the sticker store battle with its own stickers
From WeChat to Line to KakaoTalk, everybody in the Asian chat app market has stickers. On top of this, stickers are a huge source of revenue for the chat app giants. Just this August, Line reported that 27 percent of its revenues came from stickers. That’s 27 percent of its $100.7 million in revenue. It’s no wonder that today Viber is announcing it’s entering the sticker store battle with its own stickers. It’s Viber 4.0.
WhatsApp hasn’t stated outright that it won’t introduce stickers, but given its relatively featureless user experience, it probably won’t be doing so anytime soon. Whatsapp, which gains revenues the old fashioned way – getting users to pay for the app on a first-time basis or yearly subscription – may be feeling the need very soon to switch over. Why? Because Viber is one of the fastest growing chat apps in the world.
Viber’s CEO, Talmon Marco, who we’ll also be interviewing at Startup Asia Jakarta this month, says their team is also adding other key features that will keep them competitive:
This version of Viber is all about expressing yourself in more fun, exciting ways. Our new Sticker Market offers over 1,000 unique, fun, expressive characters, many of which were designed specifically for our users in Asia. Also, we are the first of the major messaging services to add Live Push To Talk, streamed instantly between users.

Along with the 4.0 update, Viber will add a host of new features including:
  • Message forwarding to groups or contacts
  • Customizing backgrounds
  • Group conversations with over 100 participants
  • Optimization for Android tablets
  • Messaging on Viber while on a call
  • Instant voice messaging (the new push to talk that Talmon mentioned)
  • And the sticker store with over 1,000 stickers
Talmon’s final announcement for the day is that Viber also has 15 million registers users in India. Of course, this is still behind Whatsapp’s 25 million monthly active users in India, but at the very least shows that the app is making its way to Indian smartphones.
On the Asian side of things, WeChat, Line, and KakaoTalk, Asia’s biggest sticker store-centric chat apps, will be raising their eyebrows at Viber’s latest announcement. WeChat has over 236 million active users, Line has over 280 million registered users, and KakaoTalk has over 100 million registered users.
Viber has over 200 million registered users worldwide.

Xiaomi Mi3 smartphone celebrate “Single’s day” for 380,000 devices on sale

Xiaomi Mi3 smartphone celebrate “Single’s day” for 380,000 devices on sale
Not too long ago, it was reported that Xiaomi managed to sell 100,000 units of their popular Xiaomi Mi3 smartphone in almost 90 seconds, and it seems that the company did it again with its Mi3 and HongMi snatched up in almost three minutes. During the Single’s day sale, the company managed to sell over 200,000 smartphones in a record time of three minutes, generating a review of a whopping RMB 107 million ($17.5 million).
The company held a sale to celebrate “Single’s day” where the company had 380,000 devices on sale, which consists of its three smartphones including Mi3, HongMi and Mi2S. In addition, the company also had 50,000 set top boxes on sale on the same Single’s Day sale. Within three minutes, the company sold 110,000 Mi3 units as well as the 110,000 HongMi units crossing RMB 100 million benchmark on Tmall. Surprisingly, the company managed to generate RMB 300 million by the end of the day, which is almost equal to $49 million.
According to Xiaomi, this makes it the first company on Tmall to break the RMB 100 million ($16.4 million) benchmark. Moreover, Xiaomi notes that last year the company that passed this benchmark did so only in the afternoon, making the feat all the more astounding.
The sales figures are really impressive and shows the huge potential of the Chinese manufacturer. The Chinese manufacturer recently hired Hugo Barra, former Vice President of Product Management for Android at Google.

Blizzard’s Diablo 3 supports 1080p for Sony’s PlayStation 4

Blizzard’s Diablo 3 supports 1080p for Sony’s PlayStation 4
It looks like games made for Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 4 will have native Full HD 1080p support, and that is just fine with us. The latest news of a 1080p game for the console is Blizzard’s Diablo 3 which will be arriving on the PlayStation 4 console in 2014. I am looking forward to this one.

This news was confirmed by Blizzard at BlizzCon 2013, where the game’s director, Josh Mosqueira revealed it to everyone. Reaper of Souls will run at 1080p Full HD resolution at 60fps. Mosqueira also confirmed that those of us who have the PlayStation 3 version of the game will be able to transfer their characters and progress from the PS3 console onto the PS4 console.
However he did not confirm or specify if we will get a discount if we get Diablo 3 for the PS4, having already bought the game for the PS3. He said that they were still figuring out how they might distribute the Reaper of Souls expansion for the PlayStation 4 console. Well, since I already paid for the game once, I would love to get it for free, but somehow I doubt that will happen. We will have to wait and see.

Comscore data show a total of 35 million iPhone users used Apple Maps per month

Comscore data show a total of 35 million iPhone users used Apple Maps per month
Apple replaced Google Maps with their own mapping application last year, which received a lot of criticism and hate at the time of launch. Now, it seems that the application is doing very well for iOS users with a total of 35 million users alone in the US for the month of September 2013, according to comScore. On the other hand, the number of Google Maps users fell drastically by almost 20 million in one year, which may not be a good news for the search engine giant if the numbers are correct.
Before the introduction of Apple Maps, there were almost 81 million Google Maps users out of a total 103.6 million Android and iPhone owners. Just after year, the smartphone user base rose to almost 136.7 million, but the number of users for Google Maps fell to almost 58.7 million users from 81 million.
Comscore data show a total of 35 million iPhone users used Apple Maps at least once a month, out of a total iPhone user base of 60.1 million in the United States. In addition, the number of iOS users using Google Maps fell from 35 million in September 2012 to almost 6.3 million this year, a decrease of more than 80 percent.
ComScore’s data shows that in September 2013, 35m used Apple’s maps at least once during the month, out of a total iPhone population of 60.1m. The 58% usage on the iPhone is reckoned to reflect the growing number of younger users who do not use mapping services; the proportion of iPhone users who use any mapping service, including Google’s, has been dropping since April 2012, according to ComScore’s data.
The data is still not 100 percent correct as neither Apple nor Google released their user’s statistics for the past one year, but the folks at Google told The Guardian that they are not sharing details about the number of downloads and they’re happy with the product.
We’re not currently sharing details on the number of downloads. While we can’t disclose specific performance metrics, we’re pleased with the product and user feedback has been positive.

10-year old boy in the U.S. spends $800 on Minecraft

10-year old boy in the U.S. spends $800 on Minecraft
We really need some kind of extra verification when it comes to spending money on in app purchases and games. It would save people a lot of heartache. We’ve all heard the stories about kids ordering thousands of dollars worth of game stuff leaving their parents footing the bill. The latest case involves a 10-year old boy in the U.S. who faces a felony charge after spending $800 on Minecraft.

How you spend that kind of money on Minecraft is anyone’s guess and yes a felony charge for a ten year old. You read that right. Seems harsh? That’s the sad state of our world. It looks like the boy used his grandmother’s card without her knowledge and when she noticed, she phoned the bank to report the suspicious activity.
I’m not sure if she knew it was her grandson at that point, but the bank told her to file a police report, then they would cancel the charges. So she did. And that’s how the kid ended up facing felony charges. The case has been referred to prosecutors with the child under suspicion of felony theft.
Guilty of stupidity? Sure. But felony? Why can’t the grandmother and the Minecraft people work it out at this point? Why do we all have to act stupid and make things complicated? I say ban the kid from the game forever for using the card and just give her the money back.
