Samsung Galaxy Gear Supports full Android apps (Video)

Samsung Galaxy Gear Supports full Android apps (Video)
The Samsung Galaxy gear is not designed to run full Android apps out of the box, although this has not stopped Ron Amadeo from Ars Technica running full Android apps on the device.
The video below shows a couple of Android apps running on the Samsung Galaxy Gear, plus some music playing and even a video. Ron managed to get the apps running using the ‘USB debug’ feature on the device, he then connected it to his computer.
The Galaxy Gear ships with a “USB debug” checkbox in the settings. Check that box, hook it up to a computer, and it will be usable with ADB, the Android Debug Bridge. ADB will in turn allow you to fire up a command line and sideload whatever you want onto the Gear’s 4GB of storage.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear features a 1.63 inch display with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels, it comes with 512MB of RAM and a single core 800MHz processor. Head on over to Ars Technica for more details on how this was done, it certainly looks very cool from the video.

Nintendo slashes the price for Wii U game console

Nintendo slashes the price for Wii U game console
Nintendo is having a hard time getting gamers to purchase the Wii U game console. One of the big reasons for this trouble is that there aren’t many third-party games available because some major game developers are avoiding the console altogether. Nintendo is gearing up for the holiday season and has announced a price cut for the Wii U.
The new price for a standard Nintendo Wii U game console bundle is now $299.99. The price includes the Wii U console with 32 GB of storage, GamePad, Stylus, sensor bar, and the Nintendo Land videogame. A bundle featuring The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Walker HD is also available for the same $299.99.
The Zelda hardware bundle features the console, a GamePad with golden Zelda accents, and all the other accessories included with the basic bundle I just mentioned. The big difference is this console comes with the Zelda game rather than Nintendo Land. Both of these consoles are available to purchase in the US right now via multiple online in retail outlets. I don’t think this price cut is going to help Nintendo perform very well this holiday season with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 both launching.

New rumor on release date of Google Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat

New rumor on release date of Google Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat
Earlier this month, a rumor surfaced mentioning that Google Nexus 5 will see the daylight on 14th October, but it seems that it’s incorrect. A new rumor suggests that Google Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat will launch on Tuesday, 15th October. It was also disclosed by KitKat Germany on Facebook that it’s going to launch in October.
The word came from Google Launchpad, which is a “a two-week boot camp for early stage start-ups helping with subjects including user interface, product strategy & technology, marketing, business development and more.“ Some developers were told during their workshops that Android 4.4 KitKat and Google Nexus 5 will launch on 15th October. As for availability, the developers said nothing was discussed, but rumors suggest that handset will hit the shelves by the end of this month, possibly 31st October.
Recently, the service manual was leaked (which is removed now at LG’s request) that mentioned the possible specifications of the much-awaited Google Nexus 5. And according to the manual, Google Nexus 5 features a 4.95-inch display with 1080p resolution, a quad-core Snapdragon 800 SoC with a clock speed of 2.3GHz, 2GB RAM, 16/32GB storage, 8MP back camera with OIS and runs Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.
As for the pricing, the developers heard that the cost will not exceed €300, which suggests that Google may follow last year’s pricing. Earlier this week, it was rumored that the 16Gb model will cost $299 while the 32GB model will come with price tag of $399.

Google patent: Gesture-based car controls

Google patent: Gesture-based car controls

Google has made a stunning technology and going to implement it in the cars and is expanding into wearable tech, has filed a patent that would see drivers use gestures to control a vehicle, according to a report from Engadget. The system, if it ever arrives in the automobile, would use a depth camera mounted on the roof of the car and a laser scanner. So for example, swiping near a window would roll it down, while making a motion at the radio would adjust the volume.

The gesture based controls will do the same as the touch screens does as per the functionality is concerned and it might replace many of the existing systems, that includes gesture-enabled cars, according to a patent filing by Google. It's not hard to imagine an army of motion-based controls, not unlike what we have on a multi-touch-enabled computer, where pinching would zoom in the navigation screen, and swiping at the vents would increase the temperature or fan speed. Really, this patent raises a number of interesting questions.

The safety issues relating to motion-based controls in a conventional car seem as obvious as they are numerous, adding this sort of futuristic tech to an autonomous car, which as we mentioned, Google is kind of into, would be an interesting and futuristic touch (no pun intended) indeed. Google wants these gestures to be more productive, however, and has applied for a patent that uses hand motion to control the car itself. Its proposed system relies on both a ceiling-mounted depth camera and a laser scanner to trigger actions based on an occupant's hand positions and movements. Swipe near the window and you'll roll it down; point to the radio and you'll turn the volume up. While there's no guarantee that we'll see the technology in a car, the USPTO is publishing the patent filing just a day after Google has acquired a motion control company. If nothing else, the concept of a Google-powered, gesture-controlled car isn't as far fetched as it used to be.
