Pinterest's First Ad Product - "promoted pins"

Pinterest's First Ad Product - "promoted pins"
Pinterest's First Ad Product - "promoted pins". The product is called "promoted pins," and it borrows from Twitter's and Facebook's ad products of the same name. Essentially, businesses will be able to pay to show certain pins at the top of search results and category feeds.

In a blog post announcing the product, Pinterest founder and CEO Ben Silbermann (pictured above) promised the ads would be "tasteful" and "transparent." There will be no "flashy banners" or pop-up ads, he wrote, and the site will clearly differentiate sponsored and organic pins. They'll also aim for relevancy: A search for "Halloween" might produce a pin of an outfit from an online costume shop.
Silbermann says Pinterest is only exploring promoted pins with "select businesses" for now, but we can expect this to be rolled out more broadly in the near future.
This isn't the first time Pinterest has explored monetization. The company partnered with affiliate links provider Skimlinks in early 2012, which allowed Pinterest to earn a bit of money every time someone purchased a product pinned on its site. Shortly after users learned that Pinterest was making money off their pins, however, the young startup severed its relationship with Skimlinks.
Now, Pinterest has investors — who have put in $338 million into the company — to pay back, and a $2.5 billion valuation to justify. With such a large audience base, advertising is an obvious place for Pinterest to seek out revenue. We expect that facilitating ecommerce, either through affiliate links or something more integrated, is also on the roadmap.
Note: An earlier version of this story said that businesses will be able to promote pins at the top of users' newsfeeds. Businesses will only be able to promote pins on search results and category feeds "for now," a spokesperson says.

LinkedIn Accused of Hacking Customers Email Address Books

LinkedIn Accused of Hacking Customers Email Address Books
Professional network LinkedIn Corp. was sued by customers alleging it appropriated their identities for marketing the site to nonmembers without their consent by hacking into their external email accounts and downloading contacts’ addresses.
The customers, who aim to lead a group suit against the company, asked a federal judge in California to bar LinkedIn from repeating the alleged violations and to force it to return any revenue made by using their identities, according to a court filing made Tuesday.
“LinkedIn’s own Web site contains hundreds of complaints regarding this practice,” they said in the complaint, which also seeks unspecified damages.
Julie Inouye, a spokeswoman for Mountain View, Calif.-based LinkedIn, didn’t immediately return a voice-mail message seeking comment on the suit outside of regular business hours.
The case is Perkins v. LinkedIn Corp., 13-cv-04303, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California (San Jose).

The Gold iPhone rush sells at Apple stores around the world!

The Gold iPhone rush sells at Apple stores around the world!
Hungry iPhone buyers, some who had waited in line for days, attempted to get their hands on the gold-colored iPhone 5S, the latest version of Apple's flagship phone.
Some of Apple's most devoted fans left the stores disappointed, as stores quickly ran out of the highly-coveted silver and gold versions of its phone. Apple's "space gray" model seemed to be more abundantly stocked.
Joseph Cruz, 20, came out of the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan with a sleeping bag in one hand, a chair over his shoulder and two new iPhones. He waited for 15 days and was second in line -- but still didn't manage to nab a gold phone.
"I'm pretty bummed out, but you know, I still had a fun experience being here," he said, adding he felt bad that he couldn't get his mom a gold iPhone. "I can still always order it online."
Not so fast. AT&T's online store on Friday morning listed a shipping time of 21 to 28 business days for the gold model.
