"Google Chrome hacked in five mins"

Hackers have defeated Google Chrome for the first time in an annual competition to test the security of the most popular web browser.
Google Crome Browser

A group of French hackers were able to bypass Google security features to gain control of a Windows PC in less than five minutes at the Pwn2own competition in Canada.

Chrome had stood undefeated in the 2011 competition but a French firm, Vupen defeated it this time.

“We wanted to show that Chrome was not unbreakable. Last year, we saw a lot of headlines that no one could hack Chrome. We wanted to make sure it was the first to fall this year,”
The Telegraph quoted firm’s research head Chaouki Bekrar, as saying.

Bekrar said his team had worked for six weeks ahead of the competition to explore vulnerabilities.

"Solar storm 'a backhand slap' to our face"

  • Solar storm forecast to be "punch in nose"
  • But it ended up being a mild backhand slap
  • No disruption, just stunning auroras

  • THE solar storm that seemed to be more fizzle than fury has had a brief resurgence before fading again.
At its peak, it was the most potent solar storm since 2004, space weather forecasters said.  But no power outages or other technological disturbances were reported from storm, which started to peter out yesterday.
Solar storms, which can't hurt people, can disturb electric grids, GPS systems, and satellites. They can also spread colourful aurora light displays further than usual, as the latest storm did.

And more storms are coming. The US Space Weather Prediction Centre says the same area

PAKISTAN is advertising for companies to install an internet filtering system that could block up to 50 million web addresses, alarming free speech activists who fear current censorship could become much more widespread.

Internet access for Pakistan's some 20 million web users is less restricted than in many countries in Asia and the Arab world, though some pornographic sites and those seen as insulting to Islam are blocked. Others related to separatist activities or army criticism have

"Smartphone viruses: How to protect yourself"

Smartphone anti-virus technology can help protect your identity and keep your wallet secure from online scammers.

Smartphone viruses: How to protect yourselfViruses are becoming an increasingly common smartphonethreat, potentially putting you at risk of personal data theft, financial loss or worse.
Yet protecting your phone from viruses is simpler than you might think and in this guide we explore the ways that you can prevent yourself from becoming a smartphone virus victim.

    What is a smartphone virus?

A smartphone virus is no different to a virus that you might get on your computer, so the damage and problems that one could cause if it infects your mobile could be exactly the same.
So-called “cyber criminals” are also increasingly exploiting vulnerabilities in smartphone operating systems (OS) in order to infect or takeover your handset.
In fact a report by anti-virus firm Symantec found that software holes have already been used to infect hundreds of thousands of mobile devices this year alone.

    Anti-virus software for smartphones

Many of the major PC anti-virus software developers (Sophos, Symantec, McAfee and so on) have already launched smartphone-specific versions of their software in the form of apps.
Smartphone anti-virus apps work in much the same way as the software on PCs; hunting out and destroying potentially harmful viruses, while also scanning all new data received - such as emails and pictures - for harmful bugs.
For example, Symantec’s free ThreatCon iPhone anti-virus app offers “protection from malware, security risks, vulnerabilities, and spam” in a user-friendly format.
If you’re an Android smartphone user then AVG’s range of paid-for app downloads - AVG Mobilation helps you protect your device from a wide range of threats, including viruses, malicious apps, OS vulnerabilities and more.
Smartphone manufacturers are now also starting to up their game in the war on viruses, with Sony Ericsson’s new Xperia mini pro coming pre-installed with anti-virus software.

    Anti-virus software for smartphones

Although anti-virus software is the most effective way of protecting your smartphone from a virus threat, there are other ways of protecting the valuable information stored on it:
    • Only download apps from trustworthy sources, such as iTunes and Android Market(now:Google PLAY)
    • Deleting financial information, such as bank account passwords, that may have been automatically stored by your phone
    • Logging out of websites when you’ve finished browsing.

Brave new world: 'Smartphones a threat to US military might'

YOU know you’re living in a brave new world when the Pentagon is more concerned about the smartphone in your pocket than biological weapons.

The Pentagon’s research department known as DARPA said that portable computing devices like the iPhone, iPads and Android phones pose a real and present danger to the US military.

“Computing, imaging and communications capabilities that, as recently as 15 years ago, were the exclusive domain of military systems, are now in the hands of hundred of millions of people around the world,” DARPA Deputy Director, Kaigham J. Gabriel told the House Armed Services Committee.

Mr Gabriel said that almost a dozen countries are producing electronic warfare systems
