"What made Facebook pay $1 billion for Instagram?"

New York: Facebook’s defensive purchase of Instagram raises a red flag. Online photos are supposed to be a core Facebook competence. Paying $1 billion for the popular picture-sharing app may boost the social network in mobile. But paying over the odds for revenue-free rivals is usually the hallmark of anxious, mature firms – not a growth company seeking to go public at a $100 billion valuation.
Instagram was worth only $20 million a year ago: Screengrab from Google play
It’s impossible to say exactly what Facebook gets for the oodles of cash and stock it is handing over to Instagram, founded just two years ago by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Traditional metrics don’t apply – Instagram is just embarking on an actual business plan, and the firm was worth just $20 million a year ago. What it does have are lots of users – more than 30 million – and super-fast growth. More than 1 million more users signed up in 12 hours for its new Android app last week.

"Setback to Nokia’s US ambition, Lumia 900 has a bug!"

Helsinki: Struggling cellphone maker Nokia said on Wednesday its new flagship smartphone, the Lumia 900 model, has a software bug which could cut off data connections, a setback to its ambitions to re-enter the US smartphone market.
Lumia 900, which uses Microsoft’s Windows Phone software, went on sale in the United States through AT&T on 8th April and is due to launch globally this quarter.
Lumia 900, which uses Microsoft's Windows Phone software, went on sale in the United States through AT&T on 8th April.
“A memory management issue was discovered that could, in some cases, lead to loss of data connectivity,” Nokia smartphone unit chief Jo Harlow and Nokia US chief Chris Weber said in a joint statement.
“This issue is purely in the phone software, and is not related to either phone hardware or the network itself,” they said, adding the company has developed a solution which would be available around 16th April.

"Android beats Apple in China"

Shanghai: Google Inc’s Android mobile operating system (OS) was the top smartphone platform in China last year, growing its market share by about 35 percent in the world’s largest market for mobile phones, a Chinese technology research firm said.
At the end of 2011, Android had 68.4 percent of the smartphone OS market by the number of smartphones sold, up from 33.6 percent at the end of the first quarter of last year, Beijing-based research firm Analysys International said in a report on Tuesday.
Android's rise also comes as smartphones become cheaper in China
The cementing of Android’s dominance in China came at the expense of Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia whose Symbian OS saw its market share more than halve to 18.7 percent last year.
Apple Inc , whose iPhones are seeing strong demand from wealthier Chinese cities, posted a modest growth in 2011, with the market share of its iOs operating system rising from 4.1 percent in the first quarter to 5.7 percent at the end of the fourth quarter.

"As Google’s Page marks first year, investors await its results"

San Francisco: Google Inc’s advertising rates will get extra scrutiny as Wall Street ponders whether the proliferation of Internet-connected smartphones helps or hinders the money-making search engine that drives the company’s profits.
Google’s first-quarter financial results, due after Thursday’s market close, will mark co-founder Larry Page’s first year back in the chief executive’s seat.

"‘Microsoft tablet biz won’t be a patch on Apple, Google’"

Microsoft’s push into the tablet industry will see only limited success, with the US software maker remaining a distant No. 3 behind Apple and Google, research firm Gartner said on Tuesday.
“Despite PC vendors and phone manufacturers wanting a piece of the pie and launching themselves into the media tablet market, so far, we have seen very limited success outside of Apple with its iPad,” Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi said in a statement.
Gartner says Microsoft lacks consumer appeal in the segment. Reuters
Gartner said it saw Microsoft winning 4 percent of the market in 2012, with its upcoming Windows 8 platform, while market leader Apple would control 61 percent of the market and Google’s Android platform 32 percent.
The research firm said it expected Microsoft’s market share to rise gradually, helped by enterprise purchases, but to reach just 11.8 percent in 2016 as it lacks consumer appeal.

"Instagram acquisition: Facebook targeting mobile revenue"

Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram has got the whole tech world talking about what could have prompted the acquisition – and why Facebook was willing to pay so much money for the photo sharing app.
The Instagram acquisition is a part of Facebook's mobile strategy
Some say that the acquisition was simply a way for Facebook to take out a competitor, while others feel that the social media giant wants to own the online photo sharing space. However, Digital strategist and tech expert Kevin Anderson feels that another possibility is that Facebook is looking to increase its revenue stream from mobile, and the acquisition of Instagram is one step towards doing that.
