"Microsoft says hacking code could have leaked"

San Francisco: Microsoft’s process for sharing information about security vulnerabilities in its products came under fire Friday after a roadmap for exploiting a severe, recently discovered flaw appeared on a hacking website in China.
The guideline, known as “proof-of-concept” code, most likely leaked from one the more than 70 security companies that get advance warnings from the company about major new holes, according to the researcher who found the flaw.
Microsoft said it was investigating the disclosure and “will take the necessary actions to protect customers and ensure that confidential information we share is protected pursuant to our contracts and program requirements.”
“The details of the proof-of-concept code appear to match the vulnerability information shared with Microsoft Active Protections Program partners,” said Yunsun Wee, Microsoft’s

"Apple’s clout likely to draw more antitrust scrutiny"

Apple’s clout likely to draw more antitrust scrutiny
Apple's clout is coming under scrutiny as the US Justice Department considers filing a lawsuit against the company and five US publishers for an alleged scheme that has driven up the prices of electronic books since the 2010 release of the iPad. Reuters
San Francisco: In everything it does, from product design to business deals, Apple strives for as much control as possible.
But as the world’s most valuable company sets out to define and dominate the rapidly evolving markets it created with the iPhone and iPad, Apple is likely to face antitrust regulators who want to curb its power.
Apple’s clout is coming under scrutiny as the US Justice Department considers filing a lawsuit against the company and five US publishers for an alleged scheme that has driven up the prices of electronic books since the 2010 release of the iPad.
The involved parties are trying to avoid a high-profile court battle by negotiating a settlement, according to The Wall Street Journal. The newspaper broke the news last week about the US Justice Department’s plans to allege that Apple Inc. and the publishers

New Yorker sues Apple for ‘misleading’ ads, Siri ‘fiction’
The complainant claims that as a result of the misleading messages about the iPhone 4S's Siri feature, conveyed through its nationwide advertising and marketing campaign, Apple has been able to charge a significant price premium for the iPhone 4S. AFP

ANew York man, Frank M Fazio, is suing California based Apple Inc for advertisements he claims are “fiction” and for being “misleading and deceptive” about its iPhone 4S’s virtual personal assistant, Siri.

"The reviews are in: New iPad the ‘best money can buy’"

The new iPad has finally reached the waiting hands of a lucky few, and the previews are all over the interwebs. The verdict in short: the retina display screen is amazing, the upgraded camera and video allows you to do a lot more with the device, and performance with 4G networks is satisfactory. (Though this is largely irrelevant to an Indian audience)
However one criticism is that apps that have not been optimised for the retina display (A million pixels more than a HD tv – or so Apple tells us) look shoddy. Further compounding this problem is the fact that one optimized, apps are going to get a

"Digital wins: Encyclopaedia Britannica ends print run"

New York: In yet another sign of the growing dominance of the digital publishing market, the oldest English-language encyclopedia still in print, is moving solely into the digital age.
The Encyclopaedia Britannica, which has been in continuous print since it was first published in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1768, said on Wednesday it will end publication of its printed editions and continue with digital versions available online.

The flagship, 32-volume printed edition, available every two years, was sold for $1,400. An online subscription costs around $70 per year and the company recently launched a set of apps ranging between $1.99 and $4.99 per month.

"Is what you buy made by slaves? Find out"

The 2012 South by Southwest (SxSW) conference in Austin, Texas, has wrapped up its interactive portion and handed out awards to the best stars of the day on Thursday.
This annual show for technologists, musicians, filmmakers and geeky obsessed reporters usually highlights the best and brightest experiments in the digital world, some which have already been hugely successful, and others that are bound to be.

It is worth looking in particular at the categories of “community” and “activism” where innovative tech solutions make an attempt to raise awareness about pressing and often disturbing issues.
The winner of the activism category for instance was the California-based Slavery Footprint which attempts to make consumers see “how their consumption habits are connected to
