10 Best tries in a hundred years of tinkering, dreaming, and daredevil test flying

10 Best tries in a hundred years of tinkering, dreaming, and daredevil test flying
since Glenn Curtiss patented a flying car in 1917, perhaps 100 different designs have been analyzed and widely discussed. Only about a dozen concept vehicles flew and drove on roads, and three designers died trying to prove their own concepts. Because of the incredible design, engineering, legal, and licensing challenges of building a flying car, just two designs have ever been certified by the CAA (now FAA) as aircraft—and the Taylor Aerocar of 1959 is the only one that was ever produced. Six Aerocars were built, sold, and flown.

When Taylor was developing the Aerocar more than a half-century ago, flying cars were a popular dream and famously graced the covers and pages of Popular Mechanics. When the interstate highway system was designed in 1956, planners thought flying cars would be part of our future, and runways next to freeways were part of some original proposals. Now, though, only some small ranch roads in the West and the Alcan Highway in Canada and Alaska have adjacent runways, but those are used for aircraft, not flying cars.

Today, the dream of a George Jetson personal flying machine seems like outdated mid-century futurism. But inventors continue to persevere. There is the clever Terrafugia, the crazy multiturbine Moller, and the hope that maybe, someday, we'll all have the flying cars we were promised. (No promises on jetpacks, though.) Here are some of the best attempts of the past and present to realize the dream.

Twitter appeal slowly declining in asian countries

Twitter appeal slowly declining in asian countries
Too open. Too crowded. Too difficult.

That's why some Twitter users in South Korea and Japan say they are spending less time on the site or have quit for other services.

After selling shares in a highly anticipated initial public offering, Twitter is set to face minute ongoing scrutiny from a legion of new shareholders and Wall Street investment analysts. The price of $26 per share values Twitter, which has never made a profit, at more than $18 billion.

Waning appeal in parts of Asia, once the fastest growing market for the social network that revolves around users posting 140-character messages online, shows the challenge Twitter faces in keeping overseas users engaged. And in generating enough advertising to be profitable.

International users accounted for about three quarters of Twitter's members but only a quarter of revenue in the first nine months of this year. About 25 percent of Twitter's 232 million active users are in Asia.

Led by Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and India, Asia was the fastest developing region for Twitter in summer 2010, according to Semiocast, a Paris-based social media research company.

Millions of new users addes in the wake of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan and during election campaigns. Celebrities, pop stars, politicians and opinion leaders flocked to Twitter, turning an experimental playground for early adopters into a dynamic online forum.

But growth has slowed in South Korea and Japan, a red flag for Twitter since both countries are wealthy and have high rates of mobile device usage -- now the predominant way Twitter is accessed. New mobile applications from companies such as South Korea's Kakao Corp. and Japan's Line Corp., have experienced explosive growth, making them potent competitors for eyeballs and advertising.

A like for a less open, more exclusive social networking experience is part of the explanation.

"In South Korea and Japan, open type social networking services like Twitter and Facebook are losing steam," said Justin Lee, an analyst of mobile messengers and games at BNP Paribas. "Closed social networking services where messages are shared among a small group of people will become more popular."

Twitter remains blocked from China's vast market but another giant, India, is open to Twitter and it has amassed 27 million users there, according to Semiocast. Yet Twitter acknowledged in IPO filings that low use of smartphones in the poor country could hamper the ability of advertisers to deliver compelling advertisements and hurt its earnings potential.

"Indian people are still warming up to Twitter," said Karthik Srinivasan, Bangalore-based head of social media at Ogilvy & Mather.

The concept of interacting with strangers instead of friends and colleagues takes getting used to in a society that remains family-oriented, he said. "People probably don't know what to do on Twitter, since you don't see your friends and family on it right away."

In South Korea the number of new users signing up has plunged since December while more Twitter citizens are going dormant, according to CYRAM, a Seoul-based analytics company that specializes in social networks. Some 40,000 new users signed up in August, about a quarter of new users in December.

It estimates there are 7 million Twitter users in South Korea and only 1 million of them send more than one tweet a month. In August, 64 percent of Twitter accounts based in South Korea had not sent a tweet for more than six months, up from 56 percent in December of last year.

South Korean entrepreneur Richard Choi is one of those dormant users. After sending more than 18,000 messages to his 8,200 followers in the last few years, he has been silent on Twitter since June 25. Choi said he has been busy running his startup company but still found time to share pictures of his birthday cake and a homemade shepherd's pie with friends on KakaoStory, an Instagram-like mobile application that has been a hit in South Korea.

"Twitter is for news and information but there are other channels to get news," Choi said. "I don't feel like I need to come back."

In Japan, Twitter's status was elevated after it functioned as a virtual lifeline for many people following the 2011 tsunami. Japanese were able to communicate with others through Twitter immediately after the disaster as the Internet kept working but phones didn't. It remains a go-to destination for discussing popular television shows.

Twitter is a special arena for "when a certain incident calls for everyone's participation at one time," said Will Tachiiri, a social media producer and CEO of Logkr Media.

But a trend for defections and growing dormancy of accounts in Japan partly reflects that Twitter has also become a nasty battleground, with users hiding behind anonymity to launch vitriolic attacks on those they disagree with. "Sometimes one can be forced to leave the space or close the account since they were seriously offended, annoyed or traumatized," Tachiri said.

There are bright spots as Twitter courts advertisers overseas including the social networking service's ability to draw people who set trends and influence opinion.

In South Korea, "Twitter is SNS of 1 million people," said Song Seulki, a consultant at CYRAM. "But its impact is valid given that it is the SNS used by people from the 20s to the 40s who are public opinion leaders."

Chen was credited with turning around Sybase Inc in the late 1990s. Sybase, an enterprise software company, was eventually acquired by SAP AG in 2010.

Chen's share awards only begin to vest after he finishing three years with BlackBerry, and the majority of the options will vest only after he completes his fifth year, according to a regulatory filing late on Thursday.

Chen's appointment came after BlackBerry stunned many on Monday when it abandoned plans to sell itself and instead opted to raise funds via a $1 billion notes offering led by Fairfax, its largest shareholder.

Fairfax, led by investment guru Prem Watsa, had said it was investing $250 million in the offering.
In its filing on Thursday, BlackBerry said Canso Investment Counsel Ltd is investing $300 million in the offering, while Mackenzie Financial, Markel Corp, Qatar Holding, and Brookfield Asset Management are buying the remainder. The investors have also pledged to a standstill agreement, for a period of one year, that restricts them from owning more than 19.9 percent of the company's outstanding shares, a move likely aimed at preventing any creeping takeover of BlackBerry.

Thorsten Heins, who is forced to resign as BlackBerry's CEO as one of the terms attached to the financing deal, could also be set to receive millions in severance after two years in the job. The exact amount will depend on the terms settled with the company.

ARM added support for their new 64-bit processors to ASOP

ARM added support for their new 64-bit processors to ASOP
Intel recently announced that they were adding support for their new 64-bit Bay Trail processors to the Android Open Source Project (ASOP), and now ARM has announced that they are doing the same. And now it looks like ARM has also added support for their new 64-bit processors to ASOP, this was discovered by the guys over at Phandroid.
ARM provides the architecture for other companies to manufacture processors on, and Samsung recently announced that their new 64-bit processors would be based on ARM’s platform. Apple was the first company to launch a 64-bit mobile processor with the Apple A7 which launched in the iPhone 5, Samsung have promised one next year, and their new processor which will be based on ARM architecture is expected to launch with the Samsung Galaxy S4.
Qualcomm are also working on new 64-bit processors, which we are expecting to see launch next year as well, and we suspect we will see a lot of 64-bit powered smartphones launching on 2014. Samsung also said that will will be working on other 64-bit processors, although these will use Samsung’s own 64-bit core, rather than the ARM architecture, we are not expecting to see these until later in 2014.

Bluetooth LE technology expected to be used in the new Apple iWatch

Bluetooth LE technology expected to be used in the new Apple iWatch
Apple has patented some Bluetooth LE technology at the U.S Patent and Trademark Office, the technology uses Bluetooth LE and it is expected to be used in the new Apple iWatch.
The patent is for technology that can be used to connect a device and share a network with a second device using low power communication, as in Bluetooth LE. The filing talks about a primary device that can establish a remote connection with a remote network, but this device does not have a built in radio transceiver.
This device then connects to a secondary device which has a radio receiver, and uses that receiver for communication and sharing, the data would then be shared to the first device. This could possibly be how Apple’s iWatch may work, the device may not come with built in WiFi, but it would be able to connect to either and iPhone or iPad, and then use that devices WiFi or data connection.
In this manner, users can leverage their mobile radio communication devices, such as their cell phones, to provide network access to their other devices without having to manually enable such connections. In turn, the other devices can benefit from the network access while remaining in low-power mode during a short-range connection that uses a low-power enabled connection.
Apple are rumored to be launching their Apple iWatch in 2014, the device is expected to be much more than just a simple communicator device for an iPhone or iPad, and we have heard rumors that it may be used to control a number of things around your home for home automation.

YouTube introduced new commenting system on the video streaming website

YouTube introduced new commenting system on the video streaming website
YouTube has launched a new commenting system on the video streaming website which is based on Google’s, Google+ social networking site. The new YouTube commenting system allows users to now start a conversation directly in the comments of a YouTube video, which Google hopes will lead to a more sophisticated comments stream rather than the current mix match of comments.
The new Google+ powered YouTube comments system has been tested on channel discussion tabs for a few weeks and has now started to roll out across the whole of YouTube. But as you can imagine this roll out is not going to be an over night occurrence due to the six elf the YouTube site. As the roll out takes form YouTube will also stop organising comments by chronology, and will now start to rank them by relevancy, number of replies and who wrote it. Which will also be weighted by the video’s creator and comment threads they participate in.
Watch the video below to see a quick overview of how the new Google+ YouTube commenting system has been designed to function and will help YouTube publishers enhance their video streams even more. For more information on the new YouTube comments system jump over to the YouTube official blog website for details.

Pikmin 3 game now available at new DLC content via the Nintendo eShop

Pikmin 3 game now available at new DLC content via the Nintendo eShop
One of the most popular video games for the Nintendo Wii U game console is Pikmin 3. The game originally launched for the Wii U back in August. Nintendo hoped the video game would help drive sales for the Wii U console, and for a brief time it did. Sales for Nintendo have now declined again and things are looking rather bleak for Nintendo.
Nintendo has announced that fans of Pikmin 3 on its console can purchase new DLC content via the Nintendo eShop. One of the stages is available at no cost via an automatic software update. The entire DLC content update is available for $1.99. That is significantly cheaper than most DLC content on other consoles that can cost $10 or more.
To access the DLC content the Nintendo Wii U console players will need to be connected to broadband. Players can then purchase and download the new DLC and access the stages from the Mission Mode menu in the game after the games been restarted. The game follows three space explorers lead an army of Pikmin on a mission to find supplies for their home planet. The stages will have more enemies to fight in the Battle Enemies! mission type. This is the second DLC made available for the game since it launched.
