It will recognize not just the terrain, but also if it is wet, dry or even snow-covered or

"Google’s Schmidt set to testify in smartphone trial"

San Francisco: Google’s former chief executive, Eric Schmidt, is slated to testify on Tuesday as Oracle’s final witness in the first part of a high stakes trial over smartphone technology, attorneys said in court.
Oracle sued Google in August 2010, saying Google’s Android mobile operating system infringes its copyrights and patents for the Java programming language. Google countered that it does not violate Oracle’s patents and that Oracle cannot copyright certain parts of Java, an “open-source”, or publicly available software language.
Reuters
The trial, expected to last at least eight weeks, has been divided into three phases: copyright liability, patent claims, and damages. The first phase over copyright began last week, with both Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison and Google CEO Larry Page taking the stand.
In court on Monday, attorneys for both Oracle and Google confirmed that Schmidt would appear on Tuesday, after Google’s Android chief, Andy Rubin, completes his testimony.

"Google celebrates zipper man Gideon Sundback’s birthday"

Try imagining a world without zipper? Well, of course you can’t. And along with Google, we have Gideon Sundback to thank for the revolutionary invention that has held pants, bags and other assorted items together painlessly and conveniently.
A giant zipper running down the centre of the Google homepage today, marks  the 132nd birthday of Gideon Sundback, the Swedish-American electrical engineer most commonly associated with the development of the fastening device that revolutionised the clothing industry.
Screengrab
And in our opinion, today’s doodle is one of Google’s best ever.  What seems like a jacket front that has the Google logo embroidered on it,  can be unzipped through the middle of the Google logo, separating the second ‘o’. As you click on the doodle, the page unzips to show you all the search results on the Swedish-born engineer.
Born on 24 April, 1880, in Sweden, Sundtrack emigrated to the US in 1905 , where he started to work at Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,  a company that designed and manufactured fasteners.

The mega-million dollar plan is to use commercially built robotic ships to squeeze rocket fuel and valuable minerals like platinum and gold out of the lifeless rocks that routinely whiz by Earth. One of the company founders predicts they could have their version of a space-based gas station up and running by 2020.
The inaugural step, to be achieved in the next 18 to 24 months, would be launching the first in a series of private telescopes that would search for rich asteroid targets.
Several scientists not involved in the project said they were simultaneously thrilled and skeptical, calling the plan daring,

"Drop in iPhone sales, boosts AT&T profit"

AT&T Inc reported a higher-than-expected quarterly profit as iPhone sales declined, reducing the amount of cash it had to pay Apple Inc and boosting its margins.
The company and its rivals were weighed down by
iPhone costs in fourth quarter, when the latest version
of the popular phone hit stores. Reuters
Shares of AT&T rose 1.5 percent after the news. The company and its rivals were weighed down by iPhone costs in fourth quarter, when the latest version of the popular phone hit stores. While fewer iPhone sales meant weaker subscriber growth for AT&T, it did help the company’s wireless service profit margin.
Piper Jaffray analyst Christopher Larsen said the wireless margin of 41.6 percent had beaten his expectation for 39.7 percent and was an “major driver” for AT&T. The margin, based on earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, was 28.7 percent in the fourth quarter and 39 percent in the year-earlier quarter.
