"Patent war looms as Yahoo demands licensing fee from Facebook"

SAN FRANCISCO: Yahoo has demanded licensing fees from Facebook for use of its technology, the companies said on Monday, potentially engulfing social media in the patent battles and lawsuits raging across much of the tech sector.

Yahoo has asserted claims on patents that include the technical mechanisms in the Facebook's ads, privacy controls, news feed and messaging service, according to a source briefed on the matter.

Representatives from the two companies met on Monday and the talks involved 10 to 20 of Yahoo's patents, said the source, who was not aware of what specific dollar demands Yahoo may have made for licenses.

Yahoo did not elaborate in an emailed statement on details of its discussions with Facebook, but indicated it would not flinch at taking the social networking giant to court over its patents.

Yahoo said other companies have already licensed some of the technologies at issue, and that it would act unilaterally if Facebook refused to pay for a patent license.

"Yahoo has a responsibility to its shareholders, employees and other stakeholders to protect its intellectual property," the company said.

The meeting between the two companies was first reported by the New York Times.

A Facebook spokesman said: "Yahoo contacted us at the same time they called the New York Times and so we haven't had the opportunity to fully evaluate their claims."

Should Yahoo wind up suing Facebook, it would mark the first major legal battle among technology giants in the social media sphere and a major escalation of patent litigation that has already swept up the smartphone and tablet sectors and high-tech stalwarts such as Apple Inc, Microsoft Corp and Motorola Mobility.

Yahoo's patent claims follow Facebook's announcement of plans for an initial public offering that could value the company at about $100 billion.

Several social networking companies, including Facebook, have seen an uptick in patent claims asserted against them as they move through the IPO process.

However, most of those lawsuits have been filed by patent aggregators that buy up intellectual property tosqueeze value from it via licensing deals, and none by a large tech company such as Yahoo.

What to your mind is a bigger event risk for investors for the next three to six months? Would it be anymore European problems that could come out or crude which could be a big problem for the equity market?

Over the next three months, it is more a concern on the rising oil. Greece, for the time being, looks like has been settled, though you keep hearing all these voices where a section in Europe believes that the damage would be far less if Greece is made to leave Euro at this point of time.

But that is a remote possibility. At this point of time, particularly for emerging markets like India, rising oil remains a big vulnerability and we have seen that in the past. It was the case in 2008 and 2011 where oil impacted consumer demand and derailed the recovery.

India is to come out with its Q3 GDP figures. The expectation is around 6.3 to 6.5. Do you think it is reasonable?

"Garage start-up: Atul Hemani’s IT firm Omnitech InfoSolutions now in four continents"

The phrase 'garage start-up' seems to be synonymous with the technology world, and it's something we share with the likes of Google and Apple.

After all, Omnitech was born in a spare garage owned by my partner Avinash Pitale's father in Thane, Maharashtra, in 1987. We specialise in offering end-to-end IT solutions.

I was keen to start something of my own right from my engineering days. After graduating from Mumbai's VJTI Institute in 1985, I joined Hindustan Computers Limited(HCL) as a customer support engineer.

That's where I met Pitale, the co-founder and current joint managing director, who had similar entrepreneurial aspirations. But empty pockets can float no venture, so we had to hang on to our salaried jobs for nearly two more years.

"New Technologies that can change our day-to-day lives"

Startups working on a clutch of new technologies that can change our day-to-day lives:

It's about a firefighter who can download the design of a burning building onto a handheld device," US President Barack Obama's statement in his State of the Union address last year, hints at just how revolutionary indoor navigation technology can be.

After all, many a rescue mission has lost precious minutes hunting for the exact location of trapped miners in a coal mine, or finding where exactly in the debris pile of an earthquake-hit site, living beings might be calling for help, or, as Obama mentioned, where exactly inside a burning

The Man of the Match is Kohli: "To be able to chase 320 in 40 overs in a must win game, and put that sort of a batting effort together was a great team effort. I committed a few mistakes in the last games after getting to 20 and 30, trying to middle every ball, which doesn't happen always in international cricket. This shows our character as a team, and how well we can execute our plans. It is about working hard and sticking in there. We will be rooting for Australia in Friday. This is a special feeling, probably my best one-day innings so far."

"The Impact of Bad Bosses"

New research has found that bad bosses affect how your whole family relates to one another; your physical health, raising your risk for heart disease; and your morale while in the office.

The psychological climate in which you work has a lot to do with your health and happiness. Recent research has found, perhaps not surprisingly, that bad bosses can affect how your whole familyrelates to one another. They can also affect your physical health, raising your risk for heart disease.

Now, new research illustrates how bad bosses can shoot themselves in the foot, hindering their employees' morale, rather than helping it.

"Google offers $1 million reward to hackers who exploit Chrome"

Google has pledged cash prizes totaling $1 million to people who successfully hack its Chrome browser at next week's CanSecWest security conference.

Google will reward winning contestants with prizes of $60,000, $40,000, and $20,000 depending on the severity of the exploits they demonstrate on Windows 7 machines running the browser.
