Future tense for users, telcos, govt, India image!

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court's judgment cancelling all 121 licences given by ex-telecom minister A Raja holds major implications for the rule of law, government, industry, banks, India's global reputation and the consumer.

Consumers: Mobile number portability will help. Subscribers will have to move to other operators in their circles over the next four months. The total subscriber base of these firms could be close to 90 million or roughly 10% of the total subscriber base. However, a reduction in competition could trigger a further increase in tariffs, which went up 30% last year because of the failure of the new entrants to roll out services.

Govt to take away Aakash tablet deal from IIT-Rajasthan!

NEW DELHI: The government has decided to take future tendering and procurement for Aakash2 tabletsfrom IIT Rajasthan, and hand it over to public sector undertakings. The decision comes in the wake of a spat between IIT-Rajasthan, current procurement agency for Aakash and the tablet's current maker Datawind, which has led to a stoppage of supplies.

"We have realised that educational institutes are not capable of handling tenders as it involves large sums of money and handling vendors. Public sector undertakings are much better equipped to handle it," said a government official, involved with the billion-dollar fund for National Mission for Education throughICT, under the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

World Football - View from Egypt: Who is to blame for tragedy?

First of all, a confession. I had never been interested in politics before, but it seems that politics is involved in everything in Egypt these days - especially in sport.
On Wednesday, the whole world witnessed one of, if not the ugliest and saddest incident, in the history of sport.
Seventy-four people died and more than 1000 were injured as a result of a riot after a football match between Al Masry of Port Said and Al Ahly of Cairo.

How to invisibly waterproof your iPhone?

How to invisibly waterproof your iPhone?
Last week, while covering an unrelated event in Park City, Utah, we stumbled upon a demonstration by a couple of guys from the company Liquipel, who we'd been hearing about for a few days and had been attempting to book for "This Could Be Big" since first seeing their video of an apparently waterproofed iPhone.
The video, and the subsequent coverage of it on the Internet, had boosted Liquipel's visibility through the roof, but skeptic we remained... until the guys started dunking their specially treated iPhone into a tank of water, in front of our very eyes. Incredulous, we poked, we prodded, and examined the surface of the phone, and everything remained in working order despite repeated exposure to water. Their explanations were somewhat vague, but the results seemed to be there. Of course, the kicker was when they brought out a specially treated piece of tissue paper that demonstrated the same resistance to water as their Liquipel-treated iPhone.

Convinced that there was legitimacy to the original video, and armed with a Liquipel-treated tissue and the video we shot in Utah, we returned to New York and showed Bill, who agreed that this would make a worthy topic for our newest episode of "This Could Be Big." So we got in touch with Danny McPhail and Kevin Bacon, co-founders and co-presidents of Liquipel, and asked them to give us the inside scoop on how they were able to accomplish something that could forever change the way we mix electronics and water (not that smart people ever did before, but you get the gist). The beauty of this process is that it's not just limited to iPhones, but anything that can fit into their patented Liquipel machine. The possibilities truly seem endless.

5 game genres on the decline!

The circle of life doesn't stop -- even in the video game world. No matter how popular a game genre might be, it's always in danger of becoming irrelevant.
Sometimes, that's due to oversaturation, or perhaps interests have simply shifted elsewhere. While no video game death is permanent, several genres are in deep hibernation -- and others are threatening to join them. Here are five game types in serious need of some extra lives.
Racing games
Blur (Activision)As much a staple of a healthy video game diet as sports, racing games have been popular for nearly as long as video games have existed. But troubling sales have led to dwindling interest at the publisher level.
Two once-powerful racing game developers -- Black Rock Studios (Pure, Split-Second) and Bizarre Creations (Project Gotham Racing, Blur) -- have closed down, leaving things a bit up in the air for racing fans.
There's still an occasional blockbuster in the genre (Nintendo's Mario Kart, Microsoft's Forza and Sony's Gran Turismo still demand attention), but in general the titles don't sell like they used to. And in a hit-driven industry, that's scaring most publishers away.

Science behind 'negative image' illusion!

Stare at the red dot on this woman's nose for thirty seconds. Then, look over at a blank white space (a piece of paper or an empty browser tab will do). Did you see the "correct" version of the image? Here's how it works: stare long enough at an object and the eye's photoreceptors (particularly the color-sensitive cone cells) lose sensitivity from overstimulation.
