"Nintendo To Release Games Digitally On 3DS And Wii U Starting In August"


Nintendo has never been a big fan of digital content for its platforms, though they have improved over the lifetime of the Wii and with the introduction of the 3DS. However they still have a long way to go. For instance, with the launch of the PS Vita, Sony promised to release every game in digital form day-and-date with the retail version.

That’s pretty sweet for the user. And now CEO Satoru Iwata has confirmed that Nintendo will do the same with its first party titles for 3DS and the Wii U when it launches. It’s the right move for Nintendo and it is about time. The first game to launch with both digital and retail versions will be New Super Mario Bros. 2 in August.

Purchasing a digital game can be done via a credit card directly on your 3DS through the eShop, or with a game code purchased from a retailer. This way, Nintendo allows the retailer to set the price of those codes just like they would a physical copy of the game.
