Kinect Gaming Motion Sensor Used To Create Indoor Mapping System (video) | TechDigg.info
Researchers at MIT have used one of Microsoft’s Kinect motion gaming controllers, together with a laptop and laser to create a device that is able to map interiors in real time.

The device has been designed and created to help emergency personal rapidly map complex interiors and spaces, and has been developed using funding from the US Air Force and the Office of Naval Research. The mapping system uses a 270 degree arc created by a LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) laser, and combines that data with the  information provided by the Kinect device about depth and visual imagery.

“Our work is motivated by rapid response missions by emergency personnel, in which the capability for one or more people to rapidly map a complex indoor environment is essential for public safety,” the researchers explained.
