"Spotify launches in Australia and New Zealand"

Spotify has launched in Australia and New Zealand, as the Swedish music service continues its quest to go global.


The popular music streaming platform now has more than 10 million users and three million paying subscribers.
Last year Spotify finally, after several delays, launched in the US, taking the service beyond Europe for the first time.
The expansion into Australia and New Zealand marks another chapter of growth for the service started in Sweden by Daniek Ek and Martin Lorentzon in 2008.
The Australian and New Zealand offering is the same as the rest of the world – with a three-tiered service. Users can either access 16 million songs for free but interspersed with adverts. Or for either $6.99 or $11.99 a month, the adverts will be switched off and mobile access granted.
Ek, who was recently ranked joint 10th in The Sunday Times Rich List of Music Millionaires, said of the expansion: “Australians are massive music fans and we’ve created a service that we know they’ll love...with more than 16 million songs we have one of the biggest on-demand music libraries in the world. Music is inherently social. That’s why we built the best social features into Spotify for easy sharing and the ultimate in music discovery.”
At the end of 2011, Spotify followed Facebook’s lead and opened up its platform to third-party developers in a bid to become the online destination for music and to add extra features, such as concert ticket sales, to its popular music service.
Earlier this month Spotify launched its highly anticipated iPad app for its premium customers. The Telegraph’s head of technology, Shane Richmond, was underwhelmed by the release, saying: “Spotify users now have a better looking app for their iPad. It works well and doesn't get anything significantly wrong. But it won't amaze you either. For that, you'll have to rely on your music.”
