"Sir Tim Berners-Lee criticises the music industry"

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the computer scientist who created the world wide web, has criticised the music industry for trying to stop the openness of the web.

Speaking at W3C, a technology conference in Lyon, he said that record labels have had a too narrow focus concerning the internet.

“Record labels have a very strong voice when it comes to arguing for their particular

business model, which is in fact out of date," he told Wired magazine. "The result is that laws have been created which make out as if the only problem on the internet is teenagers stealing music. The world is bigger than that. The internet is bigger than the music industry. The economic impact of the internet is bigger than the music industry.”

The computer scientist was referring to several recent pieces of controversial legislation – such as SOPA, PIPA, and ACTA - which have all tried to quash internet piracy and been backed by record labels.

He said that most of the activities taking place on the web are socially driven – and music is a small part of that. Sir Tim argued for a better system of getting money back to the creator of music – but said that he didn’t necessarily believe that that process needed a record label involved.

His comments come a day after he called for the Government's proposals to allow the security services to monitor which websites people are viewing and their online communications to be blocked.

Sir Tim said the plans, which are due to be included in the Queen's speech next month, will place vast amounts of private information at risk of theft or release by corrupt officials.

A person's internet usage might reveal their sexuality or medical history as people "confide" in the web, meaning officials in the government and military could be victims of blackmail.

"The amount of control you have over somebody if you can monitor internet activity is amazing," he told the Guardian.
