Say goodbye to hard drives: Google Drive offers free online storage for videos and photos

IT'S long been rumoured, but Google finally confirmed the existence of Google Drive, its free online storage service that could render hard-drives obsolete.

Google Drive, which allows users to "drag and drop" videos, photos, PDFs and files straight from their computers instead of storing them on their own hard drives, will roll out globally "over the next several weeks".


"Your phone goes for a swim. Your laptop takes an infinite snooze. No matter what happens to your devices, your files are safely stored in Google Drive," Google said on its website.

Each Google Drive includes five gigabytes of free storage, but documents created with Google don't count against that limit. Users can pay for up to 16 terabytes of storage, with prices ranging from $2.49 a month for 25 gigabytes to $800 a month for 16 terabytes.


Users will be able to access their files from tablets or smart phones, with the system compatible with iPhones, iPads and Android.

From today, users can sign in to their Google account and click on a request button that will notify you when the feature is available. 

The new service is being seen as an attempt to counter hot start-ups Dropbox and Box, which cater to corporate customers.


Unlike Dropbox's service, Drive includes features of the Google Docs online word-processing program, allowing people to edit some of their files directly in their web browser and giving them the ability to allow others access to view or edit the files.

Google Drive is available on PC and Mac, as well as Android. Google said iPhone and iPad access will be available soon
