DISH Gearing Up to Compete with AT&T, Verizon Wireless

It has been reported that the Dish Network Corp. (DISH) has recently applied to the authorities for an approval to go ahead with mobile-phone service. Previously, a similar plea was made by the LightSquared Inc. which was not approved by the authorities.

However, DISH is hopeful that its plea will be approved and it would be allowed to go ahead with its plans. The plea has been made to the Federal Communications Commission. If an approval is issued to DISH, then it would be having a direct competition with the AT&T Inc.

The aim of DISH is to compete with the ever growing market of the AT&T Inc. and Verizon

Wireless. The Chairman of DISH, Charlie Ergen, is confident of gaining the approval of Federal Communications Commission as the company is promising of using airwaves which have certain advantages over LightSquared’s.

The Chief Executive of Dish, Matthew Desch, was reported as saying, “But the approval is going to take some time. The FCC is going to make sure they don’t have another LightSquared problem on their hands”.

Airwaves, at present, are being used by the satellites, and therefore changes in rules would be required to be made before the airwaves are allowed to be used for high-traffic ground-based networks.
