"Internet browsers to introduce a 'do not track' feature"

Facebook has promised to fix a privacy breach after claims the website was tracking users across the internet.

INTERNET powerhouses, including Google, have agreed to support a "do not track" button to be embedded in most web browsers.

The move will be announced as part of President Obama's call for US congress to pass a "privacy bill of rights", The Wall Street Journal reports.

The new bill will give web users more control of their online data and let them know who is using it.

But the new button will not stop all tracking.

While third party groups will no longer be able to use personal data to customise ads or allow companies like Facebook to track users "Likes", some data will still be able to be used for "market research" and "product development". The information will also be able to be obtained by law enforcement.

Some browsers, like Mozilla Fire Fox and Internet Explorer have had a similar button since early last year. But the button was of little use.

People who used the feature still had information tracked by advertisers and tracking companies who decided not to honour the system.
